Matches are found with those of the same ethnic backgrounds, so Hawaii residents have great potential in helping not only patients from Hawaii, but from all over the world. Doctors choose registry members between ages 18 and 44 more than 90% of the time. You could be someone’s cure! Take the first step and join the bone marrow registry today.
Online registration is easy. Visit our national Be The Match Registry website to fill out an electronic registration form. Once it’s processed, a buccal (mouth) swab kit will be mailed to you. When you receive the kit, follow the swabbing instructions to collect tissue samples on the inside of your mouth cheek. Then mail it back to our National Marrow Donor Program Registry using the provided pre-paid envelope.
While we don’t charge for those 18-44-year-olds to register, there is a cost for testing. Please consider a tax-deductible donation that will allow us to register more donors and save more lives!
Volunteers are so very valuable to the Hawaii Bone Marrow Donor Registry. With volunteers like you, the small staff at the Hawaii Bone Marrow Donor Registry are able to help patients find the donors they need. The most common and helpful way to volunteer is to get trained and help at any of our recruitment drives which are held at various sites in the State of Hawaii throughout the year.
If you would like to volunteer with the Hawaii Bone Marrow Donor Registry, please call us at 808-547-6154 or toll-free at 1-877-HI-DONOR (443-6667). Mahalo!
You can also register in person at one of our upcoming drive events. Find out where our drive events will be held by going to our Facebook page.
At the event, you will need to fill out a registration form. Please be prepared to provide us with the contact information of at least two people who can help us locate you should you become selected as a donor. When a patient is searching for a matching donor, time is critical and we need to find you as soon as possible. A buccal (mouth) swab process is also done to collect tissue samples using four cotton swabs on the inside of your mouth cheek. No blood is collected from you at our drives.
The registration process takes about 10 to 15 minutes so, it’s fast, easy and painless to register.
If you or your organization are able to help host a bone marrow drive, you have the power to not only help patients register the donors they need, but also provide a community service hours for students or provide your organization a community service event they can be proud of. Please call us at 808-547-6154 or toll-free at 1-877-HI-DONOR (443-6667).
While the Hawaii Bone Marrow Donor Registry does not charge for donor registration, it costs about $100 for each new donor registered. Volunteers and donors who have the ability to raise funds through fundraising events large and small allow the Hawaii Registry to essentially register more donors and help more patients! All funds raised stay in Hawaii to support the Hawaii Bone Marrow Donor Registry! Please call us at 808-547-6154 or toll-free at 1-877-HI-DONOR (443-6667).
